Discussion: Will Paid DLC Be The Future of Gaming?

I know this is a bit of a weird topic to talk about right now, but I think it really needs to be explained. Will Paid DLC be the future of video gaming, replacing the free content installed in game and the free DLC?

Well, for starters, the secret content unlocked in the old games has been discarded, replacing everything with DLC, but why was it necessary? It was so that the developers could gross more money for their games (which is fine). But do they really have to make everything paid DLC all the time?

Let’s take a look at Star Wars: Battlefront. There was a mix of paid and free content in game, but there was just one problem with the paid content. Electronic Arts made the paid content a bit too expensive, while also making the Season Pass more expensive than any other season pass. I haven’t got the Battlefront Season Pass, but it was so expensive that some people said that they would refuse to play Battlefront (amd I would agree with most of them).

Then, take a look at the Mortal Kombat II. The game was in the 90s and you had to unlock secret content in game (with Mortal Kombat XI continuing the tradition except they had limited DLC). But with Mortal Kombat X, they had a Unlock Everything option as DLC. Now that is a cheating method that shouldn’t have been made and the Easy Fatality tokens are cheating fatalities if you aren’t the best MK player online or in general (or if you are a rich person).

Sometimes paid DLC can be useful, such as the Batman: Arkham Knight expanded Most Wanted side missions. You got 4 villains you never seen in game, the 250% completion outfit for Batman to use in challenge maps and you get to have more character trophies. But there was some elements that are meh, such as the other content in the Season Pass for Arkham Knight. The Season Pass for Arkham Knight featured nothing but skins, Batmobiles, Challenge Maps and Short Stories you can complete in 10-20 minutes. Now that was a bit of a waste to do this and the Most Wanted missions were truly the defining point of the game.

Finally, paid DLC can also mean you can expand upon the uncompleted game (like how Battlefront is an uncomplete game too). But the only way to showcase that it will be expanded upon is by making the games episodic, which is why I like the game HITMAN™, which is a totally underrated game, but it is extrememly good because it feels like it expands on the game after each episode is released, or why Telltale games works because they make their games have an interactive TV Show feel. But when it is completely uncomplete and you want to make a quick buck, don’t make the rest of the game locked behind a paywall and instead, focus on completing your game.

To conclude, I think Paid DLC will not completely overshadow the Free DLC in the future. I mean, Mortal Kombat X has Shinnok as an unlockable character after the game is completed and Outlast has a seperate story in the form of Whistleblower, which expands on the Outlast lore, so I think Paid DLC will be good, but there will be some game developers giving away free content every once in a while. And to that end, I think that if developers continue the trend of making paid and free DLC together, then we will not get too many people complaining about an uncompleted game most of the time.
