This year, two of my most anticipated horror games will he released (with Resident Evil 7 releasing this week). But I want to start comparing the two franchise entries respectively by analysing the story, characters and overall scariness of the games. So, let’s jump right into it!
1: The Story
Resident Evil 7 is a whole new perspective set in the Resident Evil universe, with a new set of monsters and a creepy family. The main character is looking for his wife in this game, but also has to survive the cannibalistic family and the many other things that happens.
Outlast 2, however, is the second entry in the Outlast series, this time, taking place in the desert, with themes such as religion thrown in the mix (like the last game, yet it is more touched upon). Here, the main character survives a helicopter crash (and possibly his wife as well) and has to avoid the evil lurking around the area, with a scary monster and someone wielding an axe as shown in the picture above.
In Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, the main antagonists are the Baker family, with Jack Baker being the main antagonist throughout most of the game. This family is already very scary, given the fact that the family has never been seen before in any Resi game.
In Outlast 2, however, the main antagonists ranges from a priest to the axe wielding person to the monster and those characters are already being teased to be the most scariest characters, with Outlast 2 cranking those characters up to eleven. We also have the main protagonist, Blake Langermann, and his wife, who is armed with just a camera and a pair of glasses.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’s main character is not a Stars member (surprise), so in this game, he is very unskilled with a gun will often miss most of the times. Jack Baker in this game will be the one to hunt down the main character first and he is shown to not show any signs of pain, which is already creepy. We also have a lady who shoots out bugs and a woman in a wheelchair, where we don’t know the full scariness of this just yet.
Outlast 2’s protagonist is not a fighter, only being armed with a camera, and he will also be chased around the game by the various enemy variants in game. There are also signs of a creepy laughter and hallucinations, which we might see more of in game.
Which do I think will be the scariest, well, obviously, Outlast 2 is going to be more scary than Resi 7 simply because you can’t use any weapons to defend yourself, but you have the urge to hide whenever you are being chased around by a enemy AI. Resi 7 will have the interesting story though, with it being set in a house that is reminiscent of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and more unnatural things in game.
What do you guys think? Let me know on Twitter @BewareTheBat20 and I’ll talk soon.
